Mexican Cuisine
If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.
Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.
Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.

I just love coming here for lunch. The people in there are so friendly. There food is just great food. I've tried just about everything in there. One of my favorites to eat there is there chimichanga beef burrito. There hot sauce bar is good especially there green salsa. The lady in there is soo sweet and provided excellent customer service. Actually everybody is great.

So this has been my go to spot for a few years . I have found that the weekend days are best because of the woman who cooks the food makes it the best . Its not on the menu but get a surf and turf burrito the beat I have ever had . Shrimp and carne asada with rice Pico thats cooked not cold and a light sauce . Homemade masa for their tacos and fried Quesadilla are amazing . They also make homemade drinks as well that are always great . Place is small and does not look very clean in dining area but I always see them cleaning the back of house . You simply can not go wrong with their food Chile rellenos are killer and son is their soups .

DON'T DO IT! My husband went here for the first time on Tuesday night. Arrived at 6:55pm. As there were 3 people ahead of him, he waited a few minutes to place his order. No biggie. He placed his order, and then the wait began. 30 minutes in total for a burrito and carne asada fries! As if that wasn't ridiculous enough, the food was below average. Seriously, probably the worst Mexican food I've had since moving to San Diego 5 years ago. The burrito was small and the carnitas overcooked. The fries were undercooked and soggy underneath the paltry toppings. We were shocked at the good ratings. Maybe they were just having an off night. But I will never go back to find out!

Al pastor and carnitas tacos blew my mind! Took some time to make but well worth it. This place is a gem.
(5)Darlene M.
Ate here for the first time and was pleasantly surprised! The food was freshly made and full of flavor. The group I came with ordered the carne asada nachos, lengua tacos and chicken burrito. I had a bite of all of them and were beyond amazing!!! Definitely come and experience this mom and pop restaurant. Your taste buds will love you for it.

Came here for .99 cent street taco Tuesday. Was hoping to put and end to my blues day. The tacos were tasty, but the lone cook moved at a glacial pace. Endlessly waiting, I kept busy by stuffing marinated carrots in my face. The salsa bar was neglected and unattended. It almost left my belief in tacos suspended. After 35 minutes, I finally got my food, but the wait really put me in a cantankerous mood. Many people were waiting and hungry to eat. For the sake of this business, the owner better speed up the beat, or all he will hear is feet heading for the street. Can't say I will return anytime soon. There are too many other taco stands to consume.

I can honestly say every time I have been in this place there is something new to try. Besides restaurants that offer taco tuesday, this place has them on Wednesday as well. I'll take mine with an horchata please. The horchata taste homemade and fresh. It's not sugary and taste like the other taco shops that have the machine processing your beverage.

Lemon Grove isn't generally known for its authentic Mexican cuisine but Sabor is definitely one of the better taco shops in San Diego County. I have been a customer for over 8 years and the quality of the meat, friendly service, and amazing salsa is what has kept me coming back. A big issue I have noticed with an overwhelming majority of taco shops in San Diego is they tend to use low quality carne and over cook it to the point where its nearly burnt. Not at Sabor! They use high quality meat and cook it to perfection, you can really taste the difference between their meat and their competitors in Lemon Grove. The best time to go is in the morning/afternoon when Kamal or his wife is cooking. In the few times I have eaten there at night, there was a different cook and even though the meat was great, the food just was not the same. If you're a fish taco fan I highly recommend the grilled fish taco. The fish, cilantro, cabbage are fresh, and they use premium avocado (not sure what the individual in the prior reviews was talking about with regards to their guac). As someone who enjoys really spicy food I have to give fair warning, they include a chipotle sauce on their fish taco that is extremely spicy but very delicious. The salsa is by far the best I have ever had, anywhere, period. Especially the jalapeno green salsa, they make it fresh every morning. I'd say the only downside to this joint is the parking is somewhat tight, other than that this place is truly the jewel of Lemon Grove taco shops.

They finally upgraded the booths! The previous ripped plastic cushion booths desperately needed to be changed out. This place is small and there are no bathrooms but the food is authentic and delicious (pass on taco Tuesday) and the staff does what they can to take your order and pump the food out quickly without compromising the taste. Ordered Caldo de res and asked if they could split it into two bowls. They did and it looked like two separate orders. Perfect for $6.99 and so tasty. Ordered a beef tamale for my daughter and she loved it. Hard to please a 2 1/2 year old but she ate almost the entire thing and I ate the rest. Not too bad at all. The only reason I wouldn't give 5 stars is that I came here for taco Tuesday once and it was a joke. I would rather visit my local taco truck to pay $1.25 for a large fresh fish taco than a tiny corn tortilla with a teaspoon full of meat. Will definitely come back. The caldo was delicious.

Stopped in for lunch as this mom & pop taco shop is conveniently located in the laundromat strip mall next to the Smart & Final. I just feel like talking about their hot sauce. I liked that green hot sauce. They had a mild green sauce and a medium red sauce (that was more mild IMO), but the other green hot sauce had kick. It was a mellow heat that builds up after each bite, and I just wanted to keep eating more of it on everything. Mom said it was too spicy for her. Other notables: - no drive thru - 50¢ transaction fee on credit cards - 99¢ mini Taco Tuesday & Wednesday Service was friendly and the food was cooked to order. One can never have too many tacos, so I'll try to check out the weekday street tacos deal sometime. Without reading all of the other detailed reviews, it seems like their green hot sauce has earned some popularity. I'm on board with that, since the Sabor is packing heat in that salsa.
(3)Loren D.
Good food Tijuana prices. Bring cash and you'll save 50 cent fee for credit/ debit transactions.

WOW! This little taco shop definitely delivers with BIG flavor! Hence the name! I really enjoyed my 3 carne asada street tacos and my battered fish taco. The street tacos came with a very fresh and delicious corn tortilla, well marinated meat, onions and cilantro as well as an avocado sauce. My fish taco was nicely battered and came with a nicely flavored chipotle sauce. Chips were also very good!!! Couple things I didn't care for was they served me with lukewarm water and the place can get really warm on a hot day. No a/c.
(4)S R.
Just okay. I've ordered a good variety of menu items (burritos, tamales, rolled tacos, enchiladas, even chips with guacamole and cheese) and nothing stood out as great. It's just decent food when I take my lunch break and feel like going more authentic than El Pollo Loco and Taco Bell (both in close proximity) can provide.
(3)SANTIAGO C.
Great please , sometimes it take a while but is worthy , clean shop , owner operator , Great salsa , they also have a large selection of drinks
(4)Amanda H.
Hot fresh food made to order. Eat inside and its on real plates and silverware ;-) Salsas are delish and "hot" is really medium hot to me. Really nice folks run this yummy restaurant.

Sabor has been bookmarked for quite a while and I just so happened to be in the area on a Friday evening. Pronounced flavor in English, Sabor is a small little place sitting in a strip mall( yelp.com/biz_photos/sabo… ), which for me didn't pack too much flavor. Just walking into the place, the smells and looks reeked low quality and uncleanliness. With Mexican food places, flavor and cleanliness don't go hand and hand though, so I gave it a shot anyway. While walking in, you might miss it, but the salsa bar ( yelp.com/biz_photos/sabo… ) stands as a little island in the middle of the restaurant, as you can see it was plenty empty of goodies when I arrived. Their menu ( yelp.com/biz_photos/sabo… ) has the typical taco shop faire, but it does include some different stuff like huaraches , gorditas, and mulitas. The five rolled tacos ( yelp.com/biz_photos/sabo… ) came complete with Mexican guacamole, pico de gallo and loads of cheese. They were not skimpy on the guac, they piled it on! To my unfortunate discovery, the tacos lacked crispiness, they could have done a little longer being fried. The meat inside wasn't flavorful, it tasted kind of nasty really. Rolled tacos were quite the let down. The "super" burrito ( yelp.com/biz_photos/sabo… ) was anything but super for me. It consisted of meat, cheese, guac, sour cream, rice and beans. The ratios of the food were way off, they over packed this thing full of rice and sour cream. So basically I was eating a sour cream rice burrito with a little bit of meat and guacamole. The burrito was definitely rubbish, although it was quite large in size. My experience with Sabor leaves me wondering how it scored such a high rating amongst our Yelp peers. Perhaps I got a bad cook, or maybe an off day? None the less, Sabor lacked flavor and good food. Lemon Grove has taco shops all over Broadway, hopefully this isn't the best that Lemon Grove has to offer.

This is the kind of Mexican that San Diegans brag about to out of towners. Besides going down to TJ or some taco trucks around, this hole in the wall is pretty much as authentic as you can get. Tamales, tacos (including al pastor, mmmm!), tortas, and anything else your taste buds desire they have and it's delicious! Definitely recommended if you're in the area. Plus, the prices are great!
(5)Jack W.
I would give this place 5 stars for food! But if the old man is behind the cash register than don't expect to get good service from him. He is not accommodating and does not ring up your food if you call ahead.
(3)J T.
I decided to take a chance and come back to eat at Sabor after I was horribly disappointed with the quality of the food last year. When my favorite local taco shop started skimping and changed the food and salsa, we stopped coming. Looks like they have changed their ways and are back!! I had the adobada tacos and they were great! The jalepeno hot sauce was awesome. Last year it tasted very, very watered down. The hot carrots were just right, not too crunch and not mushy. Excellent!
(4)Stephen b.
Great spot, you have to learn who is cooking when though b/c the cooks all make the food pretty differently. Their carne asada and california burrito are outstanding and the way they make pollo asada is different but really good after you get used to it. Better ingredients and meta quality than most Mexican spots. I often call ahead b/c the prep time can be pretty slow.

Was craving a bean and cheese burrito. I was in the area so i decided to stop in. Place is small and worn, but relatively the standard fair for a taco shop. Seemed clean to me. Prices were normal, except for the "extras", which I will come back to. I ordered a bean and cheese burrito with a side of guacamole. Got home, tore into it cause I was starving. First thing I notice is that the side of guacamole is TINY. I've paid the same price for twice the amount, sometimes more at other taco shops. They use the same container for the "extras" that are available for their salsa bar. Second thing I notice is that the "guacamole" is so watered down, it runs and drips with the consistency of salsa. I don't know what they put in it, but avocado is definitely nowhere near the main ingredient. Made me miss my normal taco shop, where the guac is thick, chunky, and bright tasting, the way it should be. (My normal place was too far away during errands). Third thing I notice is that either they put a very light sprinkle of cheese in my bean and cheese burrito, or they got my order wrong and just happened to accidentally drop a tiny amount of cheese in what they thought was supposed to be a plain bean burrito. All in all, it was at least edible. Service was fine, not great but not bad. Prices are on par with most taco shops. I hope their other stuff earns the rating this place has, and that my experience was just a fluke. Either way, won't be stopping by again. Too many other taco places to try!
(2)Michele B.
AMAZING!!! We used Sabor to cater a party for 30 adults and everyone loved the food. Carlos arrived early and brought everything, including plates, napkins and utensils. The tortillas were handmade on location and the service was awesome!! Thank you Carlos for the delicious food!
(5)Olivia B.
This little whole on the wall is by far the best taco shop in lemon grove, you can go wrong when you go on taco Tuesday. .99 cent tacos are hand made and not greasy, friendly cashiers.
(5)Quynh N.
Been going for almost 2 years now. I love this mom & pop shop! The Carde Asada fries are what I love most here, I usually request them to make the fries crispy, makes every bite delicious! Taco Tuesdays are the best! My lady & I order a buttload of tacos! The meat is well cooked, you see no pink! Also, if you like your food spicy, they have this green sauce & it's off the chart! Well all the salsa is good too! I always order extra! All the typing makes me hungry now, haha!
(5)Adde A.
I have been eating from this place for about 5 yrs and their food is delicious. They have varieties of sauces.. Carne asada fries is my favorite!!! I never get tired of eating it.
(5)Jazmine C.
Hah! It's been a few years but just as yummy as I had hoped. The new Manfriend lives around the corner, so I finally had a chance to visit. Ordered: Shrimp Burrito w/out rice and extra lettuce and pico.... ohhh yum! Not too salty, as other places seem to make the mistake in doing. & it's big! ;) They also have my favorite kind of cilantro salsa that has a kick. But with chips, just can't stop eating it!! Other descriptive phrases: Small. Mom & Pop. hole in the wall. Cheap. Free salsa bar. Simply Yum.

I am interested in trying out their other tacos but I would like to mention that they need to clean off their tables. They are stingy with their napkins. The grilled fish isn't as good as the breaded fish taco. Breaded fish was a bigger piece but could have been the batter but I still liked it. They don't offer water so bring your own or get a Mexican coca-cola. They have other beverages of course. I tried their grilled shrimp taco and I thought it was pretty good. They don't really pack the cabbage, etc. Location is easy to find and parking is available in the little plaza. It takes a few minutes to get your order since it sounds like make to order and that I noticed that the cashier/server (if you dine in) has trouble identifying the orders with the table. It is really not her fault since it's a first come first serve on seating. Seating is limited as well. Fairly priced so no complaints there. Their burritos aren't that huge but they are very well wrapped. There's a mini sauce bar/cart in the middle of the restaurant.

I have to admit, that this food here is legit for Mexican food. I came by here for dinner for one of their $1.99 grilled fish tacos, and while I was there, I noticed they had Mulitas of various kinds for $3.50, so I decided to have one with rajas or cheese and parcilla green chilies. The grilled fish taco was excellent. ( yelp.com/biz_photos/6OTG… ). The fillet was large and grilled perfectly. The fish tasted very good and all the condiments were fresh. The Mulitas was packed with cheese and chillies. ( yelp.com/biz_photos/6OTG… ) The corn on the outside was nicely fried. It had a nice crunch and tasted very good. The green chile was flavorful with a mild kick. The mulita was topped with sour cream and Mexican cheese. If you had never had one, it is a must. They also make them with carne asada, chicken, adovada (spicy pork), carnitas, and beans. Great stuff. yelp.com/biz_photos/6OTG… I tried their red and green salsa. (see pic) Both were great. The red was definitely hotter, but tasty. The service was very friendly and polite. I am giving this place 5 stars for their outstanding food, great service, and amazing well priced food.
(5)Calvin H.
The fish tacos ($2.99) come with your choice of grilled fish or fried fish. All you health conscious eaters out there, just give in and get the fried fish tacos. Trust me. The grilled fish is comprised of small thin bland pieces of some kind of white fish. Whereas the fried fish is substantially larger and more flavorful. I also tried the pollo asado burrito which seemed a bit odd to me. The chicken didn't seem like it was grilled but was shredded and more like a stewed chicken. It wasn't bad but just not what you'd expect from a pollo asado burrito. Props for having Mexican coke though. No hole in the wall Mexican dining experience is complete without it.
(3)Alicia M.
This place is pretty good. Never had an issue here. Super friendly staff, quick service. The prices are the same as any other shop, maybe a little lower. The food is great so I keep coming back :)
(4)Mohamed A.
Good food. Family owned and food quality is really good. I had Torta and it was great!
(5)Kerry C.
Love the food friendly atmosphere the price's are reasonable. So it makes up for the cramped seating .
(5)Thuy N.
These tacos are on par with the street tacos in Tijuana. One of those mom and pop shops that is owned by a really sweet family. The lady that always rings us up barely speaks English, but she can understand my broken spanish so that works for me! :) I love the carne asada tacos, the meat is cook a little burnt with a little bit of fat that is well seasoned. In my opinion, that is the best combination!! My younger brother loves their carne asada fries, and I think that if we didn't always tease him, he would actually finish 2 orders in one sitting. The green guacamole flavored sauce that they have is absolutely phenomenal. If they sold that in bottles, I would totally buy it. The fish tacos (breaded and grilled) are also amazing. My personal favorite is the grilled, but my best friend and my mom prefer the former. With that said, you can be the judge, can't go wrong either way though. No complaints here. Sincerely, Cliente Feliz :)
(5)Brian L.
I was honestly surprised at how great the food was here. The workers are so nice and friendly. Their tortas and burritos are amazing. They have this salsa that is creamy and tastes like jalepenos.
(5)Sheltiemom S.
For a little corner biz, filled w/flavor, Sabor does not disappoint. Being a foodie, uber selective, 'ordinary' meals have their rightful place in my palate/stomach. Favs. here: must have green hot sauce, one of a kind. It's kinda warm, avocado/green chile-esque. I wish they'd bottle the stuff!! The young lady is always, always, siempre, attentive, helpful, despite the rate of customers on the daily. Gorditas, ala, 'chicharon' R DA best, no sour cream por favor. Have enjoyed their TJ Taco-Tues. w/authentic selections. I must say, I do love this spot; so will my YELPers. .......cilantro kisses.........
(4)Maria C.
Total hole in the wall... Definitely worth coming for the carne asada and fish tacos if you're in the area. Carne asada taco ($1.50): They are mini tacos. Juicy, tender and fatty. Topped with guac, which was the perfect combo. Fish taco ($3): DELISH!!! It's only one piece of fish, but it's a pretty large piece. Put some lime on it and it's perfect! The right amount of batter and crunch. Shrimp taco ($4): I didn't care for it. I tried a sip of the horchata, which is their special blend with coconut. I don't normally drink horchata, but it was popular. What's funny is their salsa push cart in the middle of the restaurant. Needed a refill since patrons were taking the salsa and carrots/jalapenos by the baggies. Must be good stuff. Several tables inside, no outdoor seating. TV was playing Nickelodeon cartoons - Sponge Bob and Dora. Located next to Smart and Final with ample parking. Creepy area...
(4)Marc R.
Great home made Mexican food! $1 taco Tuesdays and Wednesdays. $1 fish tacos Mondays. Great tortas, mulitas, sopes, hurachas and so much more! Looks are deceiving food is amazing!
(5)Robbie T.
Came for Taco Tuesday. The price was excellent (99 cents) but the tacos themselves were a bit bland. I'd suggest only coming on Tuesdays, because the tacos are not worth paying full price. Staff was friendly, though.
(3)Linda F.
I have eaten here before and that was before Yelp existed. I decided to attempt to give them another try today just because I was shopping next door and it was convenient. Let me start with the positive things. The people who work here are really nice people and the place itself is very clean and cozy. Their salsa station is really clean and their Salas's are very good especially their Jalapeno one which is nice and thick along with a savory spice that is just amazing. I ordered the number 8 which was a grilled bass combo topped with sauce or a salsa and we also ordered a Carne Asada burrito still in search for the best Carne Asada. After ordering we waited for our food which really did not take too long considering we ordered an item that is not normal (the fish). We took the food to go. Once we got home I took pictures of the food and we began what we thought would be a feast. The fish was old and rubbery and I now know why they added all of the sauce on to my plate as it also had no taste and needed to be covered in it. The Carne Asada burrito was dry and the meat was so over cooked that there were Carne Asada rocks through out the whole thing. The rice was old as if it had been sitting there for a while if not from the day before and I actually had to add salt to the beans. What a complete let down. The best thing here for me were the limes and the radishes from their amazing salsa bar. I will most likely not be coming back here again and am still in search for the perfect Carne Asada burrito!

Loved the tamales! and the staff is so wonderful and friendly.

Not all taco shops are the same...Sabor is a small place next to montser Smart & Final. I been coming here for a while and its time to write a review. They offer a little bit of everything, from tortas, tacos burritos, to shirmp and fish baja style. The gorditas and mullitas are my favorite: fresh made corn tortillas with cheece and your choice of meat. YUMMY. Their salas are excellent. Tortas are big! The soups are great on the weekends. You can not go wrong with this taco shop. If you are in a big rush, good luck! Good food takes a while to make. The orders take a while, one cook, via a la relax:) Take a break and enjoy SABOR, muy flavorful.......
(4)Jason L.
They have some of the best fish tacos in San Diego. It's as simple as that.
(5)Linda G.
I lived in the heart of Mexico for 5 years, and I have to say that this little mom-and-pop taco shop is the closest I have found so far in the East County area (granted, I have not tried EVERY taco shop, yet!) to REAL, AUTHENTIC Mexican food that one finds IN MEXICO. I have been on a quest to find the best albondigas near where I live, and this is it! The albondigas is AMAZING. Packed with vegetables, huge meatballs, with rice, fresh cilantro and chopped onions, and tortillas on the side, and the flavor surpasses anything I have tried so far. I can never finish a whole bowl, so I take the rest to go, and it turns out to be TWO meals for me. (My boyfriend, of course, eats the whole thing.) The pozole is absolutely delicious, and is a MUST TRY, as well. Every time I go to Sabor, I can't decide whether to order the albondigas or the pozole... I want BOTH! The salsas here are authentic and mouthwatering, too! Just as head's up, though: I don't recommend coming here if you're in a hurry. They make everything fresh, as ordered, so there's a little bit of a wait-- but it's SO WORTH IT! My only complaint is that the TV is always on, instead of having some nice, Latin music playing, which I think would improve the ambiance and dining experience. But again... this is VERY COMMON in the casual little taquerias in Mexico, and because of the quality and authenticity of the food, I grin and bear it! They do not have a website, but here is their Facebook page: facebook.com/pages/Sabor… BUEN PROVECHO!
(5)James D.
A terrific neighborhood taco shop. The fish tacos are superb and my go to. The salsa they provide with the tacos is perfection. Really hard to find better from a small place like this. Actually we had them cater a party we had and everyone loved them. The carnitas burritos are quite nice as well. Salsa bar is also a nice plus and service is always friendly.
(4)Yady S.
Must say this was a hidden spot. Driving around hungry when I said lets try that spot. YUMMY had the 2 tamale plate delicious BF had asada tacos think home made tortillas. Definitely fulfilled our taste buds.
(4)Mimi S.
Mulitas-I had it made out of tripas which was great in taste but it was the smallest/thinnest mulita I've ever had in my life. Tacos-I had the "Al Pastor" tacos and the lady told the cook "Adobada" then she said they were the same well let me tell you they are close but not the same. In the end, I got good tacos that were neither al pastor or adobada. The tacos were made out of unseasoned pork. Tamale-I had their pork tamale. It was overtly salty and moist with a ton of salsa...not homemade. I don't think I will be getting tamales from them. Agua de Horchata- Was ok nothing special. It needed more flavor but it passes...I guess. Next time, I will get their tacos but nothing else.
(3)Shawna F.
This place is good. It made me really love the Mexican food in San Diego. Being from Houston, I have a different taste for Mexican food (TexMex) and I had a hard time enjoying it in SoCal, but this place really knows how to serve it! Before I moved back to Houston, this was the last restaurant I visited because I knew I´d miss it!
(4)W G.
If I coulda' given them a 0 I would've. I'm stunned at their 4 star rating and the glowing reviews people submitted. It's suspicious. Or maybe the good reviews are by people who are used to eating crap and don't know the difference or care. It's no secret that friends and family members will submit high ratings for crappy food to help out a failing establishment, if that's the case here. For those of you who've never eaten there I recommend going somewhere else, at least for rolled tacos and sauces. Like an idiot I've eaten there about 4 times over the years, each time thinking "well, maybe the quality of the rolled tacos, the guacamole, the sour cream and the sauces improved since I last ate there". But each time I end up throwing at least half of it away. The rolled tacos have no flavor, the guacamole is thin and tasteless and sparing (not fresh made) and the sour cream is cheap, thin and sparse. They're obviously trying to save money by serving the least they have to. I've had way better for less money elsewhere. Before you order food from any eating establishment, take a few minutes and look around at the amount of food people leave on their plates or throw away. That's a tell-tale sign. There are other mexican eateries nearby and may be better than this one. I don't know how Sabor could make any worse mexican food. But that's just my opinion. Caveat Emptor (buyer beware).
(1)Paul S.
Did you know they also cater? That's how I was first referred to them. Their restaurant is excellent because of the quality and selection. But, their catering is a phenomenal experience! I've used them for 4 parties in 3 months. Tons of food made fresh in front of my friends/customers/employees' eyes. Great deal also. Carlos is unbelievable kind and generous. Love that guy! I don't know how you can go wrong in choosing this company for authentic Mexican food.
(5)Jen H.
For the 2nd year in a row, I booked Carlos of Sabor to bring some taco deliciousness to our office Holiday party. Not only is the food amazing, but Carlos is extremely professional and a pleasure to work with. Carlos brought 3 different meats (carne asada, pollo asada, pastor) and provided plates, utensils, rice, beans, salsas, guac, limes/radishes, and made fresh tortillas to boot. We had 50+ people and not a soul was dissatisfied. I wish he would set up shop in my garage and just make me tacos non-stop. In fact, that's going on my Christmas list. If you don't have a party for him to cater you need to create one.
(5)serina c.
Found this place thanks to yelp!!!!! Called Carlos to set up catering and boy he hit it out of the park. All my guest were raving about the food. They do straight up TJ style tacos with the pork on the stick cooking as its turning. Other caterers wanted double what he was charging. 10 per person and i can choose as many meats as I wanted. Other places just do 2 and charge more per person each additional meat you wanted. I went with carne, adobado, chicken, and fish. The only one I didn't really like that much was the fish but everything else was amazing. 2 people came and one cooked meat while the other made fresh tortillas. It was so much better than having to worry about cooking. Just hire these guys and you will be happy. I was so impressed I used them again the next week for another party I was having.

After being disillusioned from decreasing portion sizes and increasing prices at shops with more prime real estate locations, I'd about given up on local Mexican food through continuous disappointments with sketchy establishments and their bland food. Then I found this gem through Yelp, and was not disappointed in the slightest bit. The food was great with or without salsa, and then portions were healthy. The prices were extremely fair and it shows in their service that they are not attempting to price gouge you. And the fact that they had fresh fruit water (cantaloupe was today's drink) was an added bonus. They have definitely earned a customer. It was a reminder that it's too often that you often find the best things in the most obscure places.

"Shooooo..."! (Whispering quietly) Don't let anyone know...but this place has the best street tacos in East County.

In my opinion, Sabor has the best Mexican food in all San Diego. Their fish tacos has avocado in it! (I love avocado) I like it better then Rubio's fish tacos. Carne asada taco is also yumm but my favorite has got to be their CA burrito you can't go wrong with it. Their quesadilla's come with a side of guacamole and sour cream I don't know of any other place that does this. I love this place!!

Judgmental Hospitality Student Quick Analysis: convenient.

They cook the meat on the spot, and hand-make the tortillas in front of you.

If you think you know real Mexican food, you don't until you eat here. Straight up Mexican taco cart style tacos with the best Al Pastor tacos i've EVER had. I almost can't eat Al Pastor anywhere else after having these. Super inexpensive and bomb salsa's. I even had them cater one of my parties and they brought an entire kitchen to my back yard....I LOVE THEM. No alcohol here though, the only downfall (loss of star), but food is one of the best Mexican experiences I've ever had. Located in a little strip mall in Lemon Grove. Kinda "hood-ish" but totally safe. Lodged in between an outdated Food For Less and an "asian foot massage" spa. Once you're in, you're home free, and you will not regret, guaranteed! Bottom line: $1.50 for tacos....2 will do, but can easily put down 4. $3.00 for massive cheesy quesadilla, $1 for a soda. You can leave full, and happy for $6-$7 easy.

Just really great food made by really nice people. The tacos are indeed amazing, aguas frescas that are freshly made and perfectly sweetened, chicken soup that is perfect for that head cold you're trying to get over. And some of the best Mexican rice in San Diego. Don't take your food to go--it's SO much better hot and fresh, just eat it right there! And don't come here when you're in a hurry, either, because they take the time to make their food fresh. You want it fast, go to McDonalds!

Sabor is a great name for this place cuz they got so much Flava Flav! I gotta give em 5. The wifey and I saw this place driving back to the new pad the other day. In particular, we noticed the .99 cent taco tuesday signage. It being tuesday and all, the wifey surprised me with some tacos from here. Actually one carne asada taco (.99) two fish tacos (about 1.79 each) and one buche mulita (2.50). I really tried to criticize this place, but failed in every attempt. The carne asada taco was very, very good! It is very rare to find a place that has legit carne asada in my opinion, but this was def one of them. The carne was cut very thin, but not dried it. it was very flavorful and had just the right amount of smokey, grill flavor. Fab! The Buche was the one item that I could identify a flaw with. It was very good, tender, and lightly smokey. However, it needed a bit more seasoning, so it was a little bland. The Mulita was good though. The fish tacos were very good, but somewhat different. They were fried pretty crispy, could have been a little more maybe, but they were fine the way they were. They had a good amount of fish in them, cabbage, tomato, and the white sauce was spiced up with some chipotle seasoning. Nice touch. I gotta say, I was impressed. All of this complimented by the fact that the salsa was the bomb and they hand-make their tortillas. The roja was delicious as usually and they roasted the chilis. The verde was very good as well, which I have found to be rare, but it was flavorful and actually had some heat to it. The tortillas were very good as well, which I def appreciate. The only thing I would've done differently is try more of their tacos, but the day is still young, so maybe I'll head back over as soon as I get my second wind. It's nice to know that there are so many good mexican places within a mile of our house. What a drastic change, I think I'm gonna get fat! ***Update*** I have recently been back to taco tuesday and it has grown in popularity, so get there early. My wife said a lady ordered 80 tacos the other day. Anyway, we tried the adobado, which was amazing, very greasy, but so good. The carne asada was good. The buche was just alright, not as smoky, tender, and flavorful as I'm used to. The cabeza was pretty good and the carnitas were good, but def not the star of the show. As usual with these places, the Adobado shines brightest. Also, the fish tacos were damn good as they use chipotle in their white sauce ( yelp.com/biz_photos/6OTG… ) and the mulitas are very cheesy and tasty as well.

We have orders; at the end of this year, we'll be leaving San Diego to trek to the east coast. This place will be sorely missed. Fried pork tacos? To die for. TJ Tacos? Excellent. Enchiladas? Perfectly sauced, and not too heavy on the salsa fresca. Their rolled tacos are AH-MAZINGGG. I can't even find fault with their quesadillas, which, sadly, I can at most places (so greasy!) - they have excellent flavor and I don't feel like I have to squeegee off my hands after tearing it apart. Sabor... I will miss you.

I rarely go to taco shops. Why go to taco shops when I can make tacos & burritos at home? I do sometimes get a craving for a pollo asado burrito though! I came to this little hole in the wall and found it to be busy! I ordered a pollo asado burrito (for me), carne asada burrito (for him), an order of rolled tacos (to share) and a large jamaica. The pollo asado was good. They chop up their chicken smaller and it is flavored a little differently (different = good). The BF enjoyed his carne asada and he also felt it was flavored well. The rolled tacos were soggy! You picked them up and they went limp! They also skimped on the guacamole! The jamaica is well jamaica and I appreciated that they didn't over sugar it like other places. Service is fast and friendly. Prices are also comparable to other taco shops. They are located in a strip mall and there is no drive-thru. They do have a self serve salsa bar with a tomatillo green salsa and chipotle among several others to choose from. Sabor satisfied my pollo asado burrito cravings, but I'll remember to skip the rolled tacos next time.

Freaking awesome place for some street tacos without having to take a trip Thi Mexico. They have awesome sopes as well, and the only complaint I have is to not go during a hit day or during the summer unless it's at night. It isn't an air conditioned place Shi being there during summer means you're gonna melt. Other than that, you won't be let down by this hole in the wall!

I've ordered over the phone the last few times to try to expedite my order so I don't have to wait long once I get there but I end up waiting still when I get there. They didn't start making half of my order until I got there to pick up. If they aren't willing to make the whole order until I get there then let me know over the phone when I order. Thats all I ask.

My husband and I went to sample their tacos for a birthday party coming up in March. I must say when we walked in and I introduced myself, the owner Carlos quickly asked us if we wanted anything to eat. He made us 8 mini T.J tacos. Very good I must say!!!!! He was sooo nice. Very welcoming. Thanks Carlos we look forward to you doing a wonderful catering at our children's birthday party.

Came on a Sunday afternoon and wasn't too crowded. Hand made tortillas, need I say more? She makes them there right on the spot and they were amazing, we couldn't stop eating! Ordered Carne asada, bf had tamales, pork, lengua, and more tacos later after we decided they were amazing. The owner informed us where he gets his food and his meats are all organic! The owner went the extra mile since we had a salsa incident and demanded we not help, and he took care of everything. The guacamole is creamy and deleicious, and the quality was hard to beat. This is our new taco place in this area from now on. The food was delicious but since he made our experience so pleasant it was outstanding.

Food is great but kind of pricy service is fast and friendly, ok portions

Taco Tuesdays: 99 cent baja tacos are excellent. I like the al pastor best. The carne asada is good too. Sabor is a weird place. It's tucked into a tiny storefront next to a discount grocery store and water dispensary - across the street from In n Out. The food is good and cheap. They make corn tortillas fresh. Unlike many baja taco places, Sabor uses one tortilla. They have a minimalist condiment bar that really needs some attention. The "jalapeno" sauce is great with the al pastor. Who knows why they have it labeled as "hot" because it's not going to burn a hole in your pants or anything. I don't like their agua frescas, they seem watered down. I'd rather have Mexican Coke in the old school bottle - $1.99 - a sentimental favorite. And in this neighborhood it feels good to have an easy weapon at hand.

Excellent food and great service. Cool little quick spot to eat. The tacos were great and so was the chile relleno

This little place has a great feeling about it. From the owner to the staff and two excellent cooks. Their menu is fresh, tasty, and always prepared with a touch of love. They go the extra step here. The first time I visited after reading good reviews here, it was breakfast and I ordered a breakfast burrito. I had a craving for mushrooms that morning and asked for them added extra. The owner accepted the order, but I could sense a slight hesitation. Next thing I knew he called to a man from the back, who arrived wearing an apron. They spoke a few words, money was exchanged, and off the man walked out the door. I could tell from the directions he'd pointed him to the farmer's market in the same shopping center. I asked, "Did you send him out just for me? It really isn't necessary I didn't mean to inconvenience you". He waved off my protest with a smile. 10 minutes later I had a steaming hot breakfast burrito complete with fresh mushrooms. And then comes the salsa bar. All are very good but the jalapeno green salsa is simply one of a kind. It needs to be savored. I take an extra mini container of it home and enjoy it as a dip. It goes a long long way because even the smallest taste of it explodes with flavor. From salads to caldo to their grilled fish taco that is an actual large grilled fillet... You'll enjoy the food here.

Yay!! I found my bean and cheese burrito! I just moved to the area and there are about 1000 taco shops around so I can be choosey if I want. I tried a bunch and then I found this place. SOO good! No need to look any further!

5 stars for their Caldo de pollo! (Mexican chicken soup for this who don't know what that is)my favorite spot to get it in San Diego. And I love their TJ carne asada tacos.
(5)Alex T.
Hands down the best Mexican food in Lemon Grove. Everything I get, I love. They make their tortillas fresh to go and even make nachos out of them.... to go. I usually get carne asada taco and a carnitas taco with a side of rice and beans. I'm never disappointed although there is sometimes a line and since the food is cooked fresh, it takes a little longer to get out. There are a lot of different choices on the menu as well.

This place is crazy good! The tacos are street taco syle. I had the chicken taco plate and it was great! I would say do take-out as there is hardly any seating!

I go here, on average, once every other week. Overall, one of the best taco shops I've ever been to. In San Diego, that's saying a lot! Service is friendly and reasonably quick. Prices are reasonable. Homemade Horchata and Jamaica are very tasty, I get one of the two each time. Enchiladas are excellent, tamales are some of the best I've had. The birria and the carne asada plate with taquitos and melted cheese are my two absolute favorites, though. The reason it doesn't get a full 5 stars is that I've been disappointed once or twice. The burritos are smallish and don't have a lot of meat, and one carne asada burrito I ordered had something unpleasantly crunchy in it, maybe some burnt meat. I just don't order burritos here anymore. One other gripe: no free chips. For some reason I just expect this at a Mexican place. Their salsas are great and they do have (very good) spicy carrots, for free.

So I am sort of ashamed I never gave this place try till a couple of months ago. Considering it is 10 minutes closer than the Taco shop I usually visit. I went in because my sister wanted some of there $1 TJ tacos on Tuesday. I wasn't going to order anything myself till I passed all these delicious plates of food on the way up to the counter. I ordered a basic bean burrito and it was everythign but basic. Major flavor explosion!!!Everything taste homemade, no canned beans here. I have been back at least once a week and I am also in major love with their Gorditas. This is a family owned shop and you can feel the love and most importantly flavor in the food. There prices are about $1.50 less than most tacos shop. A bean burrito at thsi palce will run you a mere $2.25!

Was looking for a good Taco Tuesday place for date night with hubby. Found this little place. Loved the tacos!! Its in an older strip mall located next to Smart n Final.

Best taco shop in east county!! This rating is strictly for the food. The place itself is very much a "dive" but the food is AMAZING! I had a California Burrito and the carne asada in it was AMAZING! It was tasty and had a taste like it was grilled over fire. The salsa was really good and the guacamole was tasty! You can watch them cook everything, and everything is cooked fresh. It was the most authentic Mexican food I've had outside of Mexico. Que Bueno!!

Came here right before they closed. I was really craving carnitas. I've been to Sabor once before and had the carnitas plate. This time I had the carnitas burrito. Their carnitas burrito ranks up in my top 3, and believe me, i've had plenty over the years. The meat was very tender and the portions were very generous. The salsa verde was lacking heat but was very flavorful. I still have a big cup of pozole waiting for me to try, and im very anxious to try it. I will be back to Sabor for more and might make it my spot for mexican food, and thats saying a lot!

I don't think I will be going back here. I stopped in while shopping at Smart and Final next door to pick up some lunch. First thing that went wrong, some one spilled hotsauce, and the people that worked there didn't clean it up. They threw some napkins over it and just let it sit there. It didn't get picked up until the customer that spilled it started moping it up and even then, they didn't offer to help. I don't see that happening at say burger king or wal mart, or any other establishment... Secondly, they gave me the wrong change, they over paid me $5. I point this out, and give them the entirety of my change and they recount it and under pay me by $5. When I point this out again, they act like its my fault for knowing how to count american dollars and get annoyed and start puffing all loudly at having to recount it a 3rd time. They gave me my food fast, and the food was OK, except they forgot to top the taco with anything, it was just beef. But I was sort of tired of dealing with them so I just took it home and made it up myself. I liked their hotsauce bar, and took 4 little sides of hotsauce home. But when I opened them, 2 of them had rubber bands in them (???) and the other one had a long black hair, and my hair is much shorter... Over all, I was not impressed, and the food wasn't the best. I won't be coming back. I'll just be going down the block to Cotijas next time I am out and need lunch.

This is a tiny place in Lemon Grove. Its in the shopping center with Smart and Final. If you didn't know about it you'd miss it, but you'd be missing out! After reading the first review I decided to try it with a friend. My parents are Mexican and I was born and raised in L.A. I'm used to eating quality Mexican food and always looking for a good place in San Diego and have never really found one I like. This place was excellent. I had the super burrito with Adobada. They put beans, pico de gallo, sour cream, and guacamole. The meat was very flavorful and the mixture was great. They also make this jalapeno salsa that is wonderful. Its a like a mixture of jalapeno and guacamole. Very spicey but the flavor is great. The best thing about this place is the make fresh juices. The first time I went I had cantaloupe juice and the second time I had fresh pineapple juice. Not from a machine, home made. The place itself is just a little hole in the wall, but the employees are very freindly and informative. This is a must try!!

Review is for a taco cart catered party of 70. Carlos at Sabor is the best. He first invited my family into his little restaurant to make sure we liked the product. We sampled everything that he provides during the event, which is carne, pollo and al pastor for the meets for tacos and mulitas, home made corn tortillas (yes they make them on site at the party), 3 kinds of salsas, rice, beans, guacamole and spicy carrots. All three of the meats were fantastic, with the al pastor (pork roasted on a spit) being a stand out. Home made tortillas...need I say more. The three salsas (verde, red and jalepeno) provided a great variety of flavor and spiciness for a large crowd. The beans and rice were fine. Not outstanding, but no complaints. The service from first contact until clean up was nothing short of phenomenal. Carlos was willing to anything to make sure we had a great experience and got what we wanted, not just what was on the typical menu. For instance, he threw in the spicy carrots, along with chips and salsa for the tables. Carlos was present at the event, with two other helpers. Being a native to SoCal, myself and a good amount of friends at the party have been to numerous parties catered with a taco cart. I can't think of one person that didn't rave about this being the best they have had. The only ding I would give them is that they needed more time to have everything cooked and ready to serve than I (and presumably he) anticipated. Highly recommended for quality of product, overall experience and certainly the price at $8/head.

its good, close by, beats all the other mexican spots in lemon grove.

I will admit up front that I know Kamal the manager, and his wife who cooks, but I will let you try it for yourself. So far I have never tasted carne' asada better than what is made at Sabor. It is a bit of a greasy spoon, but Kamal has spent years perfecting his recipes and they are just sooooooo unbelievably good. Everyone talks about the flavor for a reason. Kamal also works as a butcher and knows the perfect pieces of meat to put into each dish. His wife also makes the best Jorchata from scratch and you half to limit yourself or you will bloat. This is the place that other restaurant owners go to to see if they can replicate the best. I have been urging Kamal to open another location closer to where the San Diego action is as he would own the area. If you ever find yourself lost in Lemon Grove wondering how you got there and if you will ever return, go to Sabor to try the real homemade Mexican cooking that does not taste like a microwave or factory.

Great Mexican food. I got rolled tacos that were delicious but had barely any guac or cheese on them. Otherwise worth the money.
